TdFF daily: race wrap up
Our team faced setbacks and overcame them together
July 30, 2023
After eight stages of racing across France, the intensity, the challenge, and the beauty of the Tour de France Femmes wrapped up today with an individual time trial in Pau.
It’s been quite a Tour for us. We had a top ten result with Kathrin Hammes on stage four after she spent her second consecutive day in the breakaway. Letizia and Alison both came close to cracking the top ten on different stages and we raced aggressively in the opening stages, creating breakaways that animated the race with Georgia Williams and Kathrin Hammes.
And we experienced heartbreak too. Losing Veronica Ewers to a broken collarbone on stage six, the eve of the Tourmalet stage, was a hard reality to accept. The stage win or the general classification result we had been aiming for didn’t pan out.
But we bounced back and found a new purpose in our racing. Our riders made sure to soak in the crowds at the Tourmalet on stage seven and the following day Georgia was finally able to race in her New Zealand time trial national champion’s kit, in front of her family no less.
These eight days have tested us. We’ve faced setbacks and found ways to overcome them, and we’ve done it all together.
Chapeau to our hard working riders and staff for finishing the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes. We are so proud of you all.
Hear from our riders about their Tour experiences.
Georgia Williams
We came together really well on every single stage. We really lifted each other, encouraged each other. We just supported each other really well. It's such a good feeling. But I'm definitely looking forward to some days off now.
Alison Jackson
Yeah, I'm really good, actually. I didn't know if I was going to finish. I mean, the first day I woke up and was ill and [just wanted] to be able to finish that day, just so that you could see if you could do something later in the races.
Second, I had that crash and then just like dealing with some after effects, you know, but you just keep going and, and still there's a lot you can do to contribute to the team in the race. And then the stage seven Tourmalet. Really, that was also one where I was just on the cusp of making it or not. Such a hard day, a sufferfest. And then to come here to the time trial, just to ride it out, it feels really good to be able to check it off the list. You know, when you start something to finish it, to not leave a project open-ended. To ride it to its completion feels really good.

It's pretty crazy. I’m really happy. We had a good team effort this Tour and we really improved from last year. We had some bad luck with Veronica being out, but I think we can be proud, even if it wasn't the result we came for. I'm happy. I think I’ve improved a lot. I can help my teammates much better than before, so it's always good.
Sara Poidevin
It feels super good to finish it off. And yet my first, first time racing. I came in knowing it would be big. A big challenge for sure. You really don't know what to expect until you're in the thick of it. So to come out the other side, it's really cool. I mean, there's so much that can happen in any race and you're never guaranteed to make it to the next day. And then the crowds. There were a lot of crowds and they were all cheering my name.
Kathrin Hammes
Right now, I'd say I only feel tired. It hasn’t really sunk into my mind that I finished. I think maybe because today was a time trial, but I think maybe it's like one or two days it will catch up. If I think about it, I'm really happy with my Tour. I also had lows, for example, my crash and when Veronica crashed, but of course I also had ups, especially in the middle part of the race with the breakaway and fighting for the QOM points and being in the breakaway and then finishing in the top 10 on the stage.
Letizia Borghesi
I want to speak about the 2024 Tour because I think I’ve improved from last year and I had some good performances, but I missed a little bit [to get the results] and I know what I have to work on for next time. I want to arrive even more [prepared] and in shape next year to reach some good results. And so I am really motivated to work.
